Thankless tasks

Pine trees are lovely. Pine needles are equally beautiful unless one is the appointed rake wrangler. Everyone goes on about the beauty of fall color. We had lots of it here a couple of weeks ago. I think I have removed all of the remains from the lawn, first into cans, then into the car, then to the transfer station which does not charge for the first 100 pounds of the stuff. I paid for 20 pounds today. There have been days when I went twice and even then paid for some. Here's hoping that the wind is done cleaning the dead material from the trees, at least until after I get back from my trip.

Tomorrow morning will find me a 0dark30 checking into the local international airport. It will be the first of five visits to airports for the day. The second airport is the easiest. I stay on the plane and it takes of again. The third airport is not too bad the first time. I get off the plane and find my bag and a rental car. It is good it is a fun airport, because I get to go back two more times and visit it later in the day. I am hoping everyone has their boarding passes ready and their game boys and iPods charged so it will be a quiet flight.

Oops, I missed a day

It seems that when I am going on a trip, the things I must do are farther from being related to the trip, the closer departure looms. Yesterday was a full day. Nothing happened that included packing or preparing for departure, but somehow there were no spare moments to sit and mull things over in front of a screen.

It all started the usual way in the morning shoveling children out the door for school. I spent a couple of ours labeling books in my son's classroom like I do every Wednesday morning. That was followed by a visit to the ski shop to pick up the long awaited skis that I ordered last month. It is important to have them here even though the first flake is still up in a cloud somewhere. Tomorrow will most likely involve yet another trip to said shop to collect the helmet that was not there yet yesterday. After a brief stop by home to rake the front yard, and some of the back, pay some bills, feed the kids dinner, I jetted off to Awana with my son in tow. Somehow, the computer and the blog were not part of the day. I was too tired when I returned home to think about turning it on.

The latest turn of events here actually has it roots last weekend. My youngest brother knows the hazards of sports at an advanced age, but my husband still thinks he can roller skate. At least he did before Saturday. He knows how to do things right. He fell backwards on his backside and managed to rupture something in his chest which makes it difficult to move, or especially cough. Sneezing is misery. So what else did he pick up at the skating rink, from one of those snotty nosed kids. You guessed it, a cold. He has decided not to try flying next week, so he will be staying home with the dog for the holiday. We will miss him.

Today at least I managed to turn on the computer tonight. My day started with a short walk with the dog to the library to return a book that comes due during my trip. After that, I made a trip to the grocery store to make sure that the family has food in my absence. Except for one, they have drivers licenses and car keys and credit or debit cards, but I still get to do the shopping. I ran out after that to help sell books at the book fair at school to help the library. My day went downhill from there.

Tomorrow I get up early to print my boarding pass, so maybe I can get a word in then. Looking forward to seeing both of my loyal readers soon.

Some signs are less important than others

This one, for example is bent on being ignored:It lives on the tree on the left edge of the frame below, and I am sure the folks who live on this street are really happy about the strange people and dogs who emerge from the woods on a daily basis, like me. Of course they all trot a few feet up the trail to deposit their yard trimmings, so they should not complain too much about how I use the trail. This little bit of forest is just a couple of blocks from our house. It is not quite the same as living among acres of our own woods, but it is a pleasant diversion from walking down city streets. There are few sidewalks in our neighborhood, so most of the walking is right up the street. Once we get to the right place, we do not worry about cars at all. Of course, someone might not want us here, but they should unroll the sign, if they really mean to keep us out. I have seen enough signs of human and canine transit to think the trail is rather well used. Every morning, we pick up lots of cans for the recycle bin. It seems they keep coming back. In my yard, the pine trees drop cones and needles, but those must be a special variety along the trail, because they drop beer cans in great quantity.

And I want a big pink aluminum one . . .

This picture is for those who understand sincere pumpkin patches and other historical desires. It seems that Walmart has something for everyone, even Lucy.

Brief lapse

I apologize for those of you who think I am celebrating Post a Day month by really saying something every day. The silence of the last two days stems from a trip west to see my niece swim a few brief laps in the King County Aquatic Center pool at the Division 2A State championships. You should ask my sister how she did, or just pick up the local paper. At one point, it appeared she changed her allegiance. Today before we left, the girls had a swinging good time together, hanging out in the woods behind the photographer's house.
