The passing show
Yesterday was the famous Camelot yard sale. It happens every year the weekend before Bloomsday, perhaps as our little way of introducing Lilac Week to the world. I know the week when our city celebrates itself includes parades, especially the one with 50,000 participants that comes next Sunday morning. We had a parade of our own. It featured people who might be embarrassed to be seen carrying silly things down the street in public doing just that. People like this guy who obviously found a great deal on a wood splitter, but not on a truck to pull it with.
A trash can and a hand truck help move great deals home.
If you throw out the baby, there is plenty of room in the stroller for the water dispenser.
Sometimes it is best to carry your treasures by hand.
Everyone enjoys a day out in the sunshine, even all four of these rather furry kids. That would be two in the stroller, one in the tummy pack, and one over the shoulder for good measure. Shadow was fascinated when they stopped to rearrange the group right in front of her house. Of course she was out to watch the show too.
Today we took a ride on the Centennial trail to celebrate the beginning of Lilac Week, when our fair city puts its best foot forward and hopes it is spring. My boy, flying along. We each rode 25 miles. My brother could divide and conquer the same way for his 50 if the way is too long. I am sure he will make it though, with his fine cheering section.
Twofer.
Such a bargain.
Ready to head home.

Winning shot
As my daughter left on Friday two weeks ago to spend some time with her friends in California before joining the group for Summit, she realized (aloud) that she had completely forgotten to print and frame a picture for the fine arts competition. She grabbed her thumb drive and dropped a couple of images onto my computer, so I could print them for her and then frame them. She sure was lucky I was following her a few days later.
They were good pictures, but not great ones.
When we arrived at the airport, as she was moving her Spanish book from her checked bag to her carry on, to make sure the checked bag was under 50 lbs, she threw a picture at me that had been tucked in her book. This looked more like a winner to me, but she said it was nothing, just an assignment from Digital Media class. She complained that it was a poorly assembled composite of two images and she did not like it. You be the judge.

There were several to choose from, and you can see from the drop that I did not choose the exact same one she did, but it was a winner.
You'd think she might put it up on facebook or something.

Home again
Last week was lots of fun. As soon as my daughter returns my memory card, I can show you decent pictures too. I will include a few from my phone, which takes marginal pictures at best. The most difficult days were the travel days, especially Wednesday the 15th. I did my taxes early, so that was not a problem. Around 5:30, my husband dropped me off at GEG for a 6:10 flight to RNO. Southwest may fly inexpensively, but they do not fly directly to anywhere I want to go. We stopped to drop off and pick up some friends in BOI along the way. My daughter brought a new pair of sunglasses. She did not think they were right for me, so I gave them back.
I hopped off the plane in RNO and waited at the gate for the rest of the group. I saw no need to exit the secure part of the airport to meet them and return through security again. My daughter had spent four days with a friend in Truckee, so she joined the group in Reno.
Shortly after they arrived, we boarded a plane for DIA. We did wait long enough for the cards to come out though.
Would it be asking too much to let someone else pick up those passengers at SLC along the way?Fortunately, from Denver we flew without stopping to RDM. Unfortunately, RDM is an hour and a half by car from Greensboro, where we arrived at 2:00 AM local time. Fortunately, we felt more like it was 11:00 PM, so the kids were all still awake and chipper. Some of them were acting like the day was just beginning. I tucked in for the night soon after I received my room key.

I woke up at my usual early hour and took a short walk around the mall next to the hotel/convention center. It did not bother me that it was closed, since I did not come to shop. The kids loved having a mall next door though. After breakfast at Biscuitville, we checked in for Summit and for the various individual activities, such as Fine Arts, Bible Quizzing, Games and the Citation Ceremony. I found the fitness center and the pool, and we rested until the first evening session.
Friday was games day. We turned out early for check in at 7:00 EDT only to find that the fire department was not happy about the layout of the room until 8:00. We were a regional team, representing Northern California and Northern Nevada (and Eastern Washington) which had held exactly one games practice with the team. We know the games, but we had not played together. We came in second of the three teams on our first games circle. Everyone played in the first runoff, which was our last. We took the afternoon off and played in the pool, visited the mall and I wandered over to the fitness center again. I needed to do some running or walking to keep myself in shape for Bloomsday which is in 9 days now.
Friday evening was the Citation Ceremony where 182 high school seniors, my daughter among them, were presented with their Citation Awards.
For those of you are not involved in Awana, earning a Citation Award involves 10 years of work from 3rd grade through the senior year in high school, doing Bible study, memorization, service and Bible reading, completing an age appropriate book each year. I am very proud of my daughter's accomplishment, and I am thrilled I could be there to see her receive her award from Art Rorheim, the founder of Awana. Like many of the seniors receiving their Citation Awards, my daughter has been participating in Awana and has completed her book every year since she was 3. After the ceremony, Art addressed the crowd, and I was impressed how connected he still is with kids at the age of 90. I hope I may live as long and as well as he has.

Saturday was fine arts day for our team. After another breakfast at Biscuitville, we watched three of our team members who were doing performing arts: one saxophone player, one flute player (not mine) and one doing a council time presentation. When that was over we worked on our free time activities again. The static displays had been scored by then, and my daughter's picture was one of 7 with best of show ribbons on it.

Sunday was quizzing day for us. We had three teams in three different rooms. Two were done after the first round. One completed two more rounds to finish with silver medals. We took the afternoon off and took the kids bowling.

Sunday evening we wrapped things up by watching the platinum round of Bible Quizzing. Those kids memorized a lot, and were able to recall more than I ever could. After the quizzing champions received their awards, the winners of the fine arts competition were announced. My daughter's picture was selected as the best of the photographs in the competition, which earned her a $500 scholarship to the school of her choice, a nice trophy and a giant check to bring home. Of course we brought it home. We enjoyed a team dinner at TGIFridays to celebrate a great week together.
Monday we slept in again, or woke up early to work out depending on personal preference. We checked out of the motel around noon and headed by car to RDM. I saw North Carolina for the first time by day. The have very different trees in their forests than we do. Dogwood was blooming, and everything was green. In another month, we might have Dogwood and green things here too. They are starting to come around now. The trip home was long in a different way than the trip out. We flew direct from RDM to LAS, where we waited an hour to connect to RNO. Our arrival time was too late to depart for home. GEG is one of those airports where they shut everything down for the night. We took advantage of the proximity of In N Out Burger to stop for dinner at one of our favorite places.
We spent what was left of the night with a friend, before returning to the airport at 5:10 for the flight home from RNO to GEG via PDX for variety. I listened to the safety message 9 times, and the best presentation was my first crew when I left home. The best arrival message was the crew that dropped us at LAS with the red head stewardess who skillfully sang about Southwest to the tune of Rocky Top. I managed to visit seven states, most of them in the west, but I never made it to California. I will save that for next month. There should be an In N Out there too.

I am still catching up on sleep, which is a result of hanging out with teenagers on their schedule more than recovering from jet lag. For the most part, I kept track of what time it was at home and ate at the times I usually did at home. Other than the morning of games, I even managed to crawl out of bed between 5 and 6 PDT which made coming home simpler.

The true meaning of spring
When we think of spring, we think of warm days and sunshine.
Sometimes we think of walking the dog in the sun one day and the snow the next.
We think of that last little bit of snow melting from the lawn.
We also think of the whole lawn covered by snow again a few days later.
We think of planting pretty flowers to brighten the yard.
Then we think how nice they look covered with a fresh blanket of snow.
This morning, I found quite a bit of the white stuff when I went out to pickup after Shadow.
When I took the boy to band, I found myself plowing my way down the street. Notice how much collected on the front of the car. I left it out so it would not drip in the garage before I went back out again. Also of note are the summer tires on those shiny rims which came with the car. Our lovely state thinks nobody needs studded tires after April 1. I might have found a use for them as I was slipping around this morning dodging school buses and other traffic.
Why did they invent these after the race car driver was too heavy to push around the store? Just after I finished with this shot, a lady came by who needed this one to do her shopping. We were happy to give it to her. This is one of many things we did with spring vacation. Notice the dry warm parking lot?

Yesterday and today
Yesterday morning, when I woke up, there were sufficient inches of snow and slush on the road to make me not want to ride my bike anywhere. I drove to the local park and ride and hopped on a bus downtown to discuss and deliberate the case presented to the jury.
On mornings like that, the basic rule is to find a line and park on it. Those other two cars were there when I arrived. I was pleased that nobody else thought there was enough space there to put an SUV.
When I came home, someone needed to go for a walk in whatever snow was left.
We found some nice prints and good smells.
This morning, the ground was wet enough, and there was enough snow in the air to make me want to leave the bike home again. This is the same scene out the same bus window 24 hours later. Spring is not a season of consistent weather.

This afternoon, we presented our verdicts to the judge, the attorneys and the defendant. One of the reasons that deliberation took so long is that there were four verdicts to reach. Another reason was a severe lack of evidence. After a discussion of the case with the attorneys, we all hurried back to our lives. I have another week when I need to "call in" nightly before I am completely done. I am hoping that checking in is all I need to do next week. In our modernized county, I have the option of checking a website instead of picking up the phone.
